Viv Richards Not Too Impressed by Rohit Sharma

Former West Indies captain Viv Richards described Indian star Rohit Sharma's contrasting performances as "bizarre." Rohit's performance in ODI and Test is disconcerting. While he is about to become one of ODI's greatest batsmen, his record in The Tests speaks differently.

Rohit is the third-highest centurion of the Indian Industry (ODIs). The right-handed batsman is already 25 years old in the 50 and over format. He also recorded a record three tons double in ODI. In T20Is too, it is one of the best in the world and has marked four centuries. But it was his record in the tests that surprised many. Rohit started his testing career in 2013 by scoring two centuries in his first two games.

But since then, this is nothing ordinary. Rohit managed to score just a century after his series debut and has yet to consolidate his place on the test team. Viv Richards has now tried to explain why Rohit failed to integrate his limited format into cricket tests.

One of the greatest batsmen to have played the game, Richards said, is the cricket test that is at the root of Rohit's struggles.

"I saw him the other night and I told him, that 25 cents you have in cricket one day, you scored those points with a defensive field. In white-ball cricket, there are a lot of gaps and few people in a catch position, so he gets away with it. In cricket testing, you have more sensors in position. As long as you're past your initial attack period, you can have the same aggression for the red ball as for the white ball," Richards told the Economic Times.

It (Rohit's disc) is strange. I do not know the psyche of the individual or his thought process. 25 hundred ODI, it sounds good, but his record is not in the tests. Rohit now has another chance, so the stuff is there. If he wants enough, and if he feels he hasn't done enough justice to red cricket, then he should start rectifying that," he added.

India, meanwhile, did not include Rohit Sharma in its eleven for the first test underway against the West Indies. Rohit scored 50 in the preseason game, but the team went with Hanuma Vihari and Ajinkya Rahane.
