Joel Wilson and Chris Gaffaney sacked from Ashes 2019
Joel Wilson and Chris Gaffaney will no longer be allowed to participate in the AshesTest 2019. The first three tests were the scene of numerous refereeing errors. Wilson had eight wrong decisions at Edgbaston, while Gaffaney was overturned at seven decisions at Headingley.
Veteran Erasmus Marsh and rookie Ruchira Palliyaguruge will be the new referees for the fourth Test at Old Trafford, starting on Wednesday 4 September. The third referee in charge will be Kumar Dharmasena.
Although Erasmus is also nominated for the fifth test at the Ring, Dharmasena and Palliyaguruge will change roles. Arbitration has been an essential topic of discussion in this series due to several decisions made on the ground by the Decision Control System (DRS).
Wilson made a massive mistake in the third Test by not giving England hero Ben Stokes to LBW in Nathan Lyon's match. Lyon made a strong but unsuccessful appeal. Australia had exhausted all its criticism and therefore, could not challenge its decision. DRS then showed that the batsman would have been absent as the ball hit the middle and leg.
Australia Could have won the game and kept the ashes, but that was not the case. Stokes instead guided England to an incredible victory. The first three tests were marred by bad referees. According to The Australian, out of 50 decisions that have been reviewed, 38% have been overturned. To be precise, 19 decisions were found to be incorrect.
England will face Australia in the fourth Test, which starts September 4-8 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
