The Indian Team isn’t Anyone’s Personal Property
Bengal cricketer Manoj Tiwary has always expressed his opinion on social media. He was very disappointed not to have been selected for the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. And recently, he asked selectors what the selection criteria were after being overlooked for the Duleep Trophy despite a good national season.
After the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales, questions about the future of MS Dhoni in the Indian team have multiplied. Many believe that Dhoni should have suspended his boots after the ICC mega-tournament. But he didn't hint after India's shocking semi-final defeat to New Zealand.
BCCI also did not comment on Dhoni's retirement. But they said Rishabh Pant will take on the job of wicketkeeper for the time being. MSD itself has withdrawn from the Caribbean tour and will not represent India for two months.
Meanwhile, Manoj spoke of speculation about the former Indian skipper's retirement. He thinks the time has come for BCCI to call for Dhoni's future.
"Dhoni has done a lot for our country. He's been a big part of this team. Sachin Tendulkar recently said that the time had come for Dhoni to settle himself, he played a lot. Although Virat Kohli said the team needed Dhoni, I believe the selectors must answer the call. It's time to show courage and take the plunge".
Tiwary thinks we shouldn't persist in poor performances. He also doubted that selectors would continue to use Dhoni based on Dhoni's past exploits. Moreover, the 33-year-old did not mince his words by saying that the Indian team was nobody's property and that young people who do well at the national level should have the opportunities they deserve.
"In recent times, Dhoni's performance has declined considerably. I wouldn't have said that if it was only for a round or two. But we have to line up the best team. Those who play, stay and those who don't have to walk away".
"I don't know if the selectors give Dhoni a chance based on the past. There are several talented cricketers in our country and they should have chances. The Indian team is not anyone's personal property. It's a team of the nation and we have to take that into account".
